Who are we?

Port of Leith Housing Association is a registered Scottish Charity and a not- for- profit organisation.  For over 30 years Port of Leith Housing Association has been at the heart of the redevelopment of Leith.  In the early years the emphasis was on redeveloping the older tenements. Latterly, new house building, community regeneration and promoting pride in Leith has become the main thrust of activity.

The Association sees its role as providing quality, affordable, well maintained housing. We will continue to develop homes in Leith and try to ensure that the exciting new developments, which will take place in the years ahead, include opportunities for people from all social and economic backgrounds.

Where does the money come from?

The Association is in receipt of a housing association grant. This grant comes from Communities Scotland and is administered on their behalf by the City of Edinburgh Council (Development Funding) Housing Dept.  In addition the City of Edinburgh Council helps our work by providing occasional sites and buildings for development. Increasingly though the Association seeks to reinvest resources produced from our own business and to raise loans from the private sector in order to pay for new houses and flats.

Who Controls The Association?

The Members do.  The Association is a Member led organisation.  Anyone who lives in Leith or who has an interest in the provision of good quality housing and Leith is welcome to join. Members purchase a £1 share and are entitled to attend the Annual General Meeting and stand for election as Committee Members.  The Committee of Management oversees and instructs the activities of the Association.  Staff, who report to Committee, carry out the day-to-day running of the Association.

Do Members get a dividend?

No.  Because our activities are carried out for the benefit of the community any surpluses are reinvested to provide good quality homes.  All Members of the Committee of Management give their time and services freely and receive no personal benefit.

Is the Association accountable to anyone?

Yes, the Committee is accountable to the Members and so to the local community.  In addition the Government, Communities Scotland, and the Financial Services Authority all regulate the Association.
