We clean mirrors
Yes, we do. Most of the work we do here is cleaning mirrors, helping people to see themselves, discover and recover their skills and self-confidence. I know it sounds strange and you would think that people would know that they can get that job, get onto that course. But life is hard and self-confidence is easily and quickly lost. Unless you are using those skills or talents it’s too easy for people to think that negative stereotypes that polite people whisper, about refer to them.
They don’t look into the mirror and see the person who has been an unpaid carer for 20 years. The person who has cherished and nurtured children in difficult circumstances, tried and failed so many times to get a well-paid job, had to endure health issues or the person who has had the same job for years and is now shell shocked by unemployment.
Here at Community Works our job is to help people realise that there are things that they can do, to identify for themselves what they want to do and help them get there.
Community Works provides assistance to people living in Leith or North Edinburgh who are looking to get into work or progress towards working. We particularly welcome enquiries from Port of Leith Housing Association tenants.
