TOIL - Training Opportunities Lothian
Port of Leith Housing Association started the TOIL project in February 2004. TOIL is a work experience, training and mentoring project based around the construction industry.
The project offers manual and trades paid work experience placements, and targets young people leaving school with few or no qualifications. Some of the clients may fall into the socially disengaged or form part of the NEET group (not in education employment or training). The TOIL programme delivers a real and practical introduction into the world of work and adulthood. On completion of the placement young people are supported to enter employment, work or further training/education.
Outcomes
The TOIL formula produces excellent results achieving positive outcome statistics of more than 70%.

Results at 31 January 2007
The TOIL Formula
The TOIL model, working with small businesses, ensures trainees receive specific and consistent training in a particular skill area delivered by an experienced and skilled person on the job. The intimate environment allows work skills to be learned through observation and support and mentor relationships to develop naturally, enabling trainees to learn the necessary employability skills peripatetically.
TOIL April 2007 onwards
POLHA secured a Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian's contract to deliver the 'Get Ready For Work' Program 2007/2008. As a result TOIL is able to be dependant on public funding and its future is more secure.
TOIL are now in the exciting position to be able recruit trainees from all over Edinburgh. TOIL will access a wide range of placement opportunities through out Edinburgh, through our long established links with contractors and more recently through our partnership arrangements with other Edinburgh based Housing Associations.
Not only is TOIL expanding geographically but the opportunities for Training are expanding too.
