Developments in progress
Western Harbour – Sites S2 and R2
Forth Ports have selected Port of Leith Housing Association as the preferred partner for the provision of over 200 new affordable homes within the Western Harbour. The Association is finalising purchase of these sites opposite Lindsay Road.
Duke Street United Free Church
The original Duke Street Church building is being replaced by a new church facility, 18 flats and 4 mews houses.
Buchanan Street / Elliot Street
As part of the merger with Lorne Area Housing Association we inherited sites at Buchanan Street and Eliot Street. Both of these will be worked up with some design changes during 2006.
Albert Street
The merger has also made available the former offices of Lorne Area Housing Association. There are plans to convert these to residential use.
In these and all of our developments we work closely with the City of Edinburgh Council who are providers of development funding grant.
Community Initiatives
A range of community initiatives are underway helping to strengthen the community in Leith and provide opportunities, some are highlighted here. See also the community pages of the website.
TOIL- Training Opportunities in Leith
The Association has been able to offer training opportunities to over 50 young people in Leith to date, primarily in construction and associated industries. These young people have for the most part been school leavers who have found it difficult to identify appropriate career paths. The Association places young people with companies, initially for 26 weeks, with the opportunity to enter into employment in the industry dependant on performance. We are excited about the potential of this programme which is now attracting national interest. Contact Alan Nicol 554 0403.
Leith Theatre
The Association is chairing a Steering Group which has been asked by City of Edinburgh Council to explore the possibility of a Community Trust being set up to manage the Leith Theatre complex in the future. This is a major undertaking and involves working with Leith Festival, Community Councils and several other partners.
