Ending your tenancy

1. Notice period

You must advise us in writing if you wish to end your tenancy and give us 28 days’ notice. The information leaflet including the appropriate form can be downloaded here, with the details we will need from you.

2. What happens next

After receiving your notice to end your tenancy, a member of staff will carry out a pre-termination inspection. The Association expects that your property should be ready to let to the next tenant, so you will be advised at this time of any repairs or decoration which you might be responsible for. Failure to complete this request can result in repairs being billed to you by the Association.

We expect any alterations you made to be reinstated, and all personal belongings removed. Decoration should be neutral, with all fixings removed from walls and any holes filled.

The property must be thoroughly cleaned, with all dirty marks removed from doors, walls and woodwork.

All keys must be returned on or before your tenancy end date, including door entry fobs.

3. Arrears from a past tenancy

If you left a previous Port of Leith tenancy owing rent and you wish to discuss paying these arrears, please contact the housing management team on 0131 554 0403.

You should be aware that if you have left a council or housing association tenancy owing rent, this might affect your prospects of being re-housed if you have not made arrangements to clear these. Similarly, if you left a previous tenancy with a record of severe antisocial behaviour, this could affect your chances of being re-housed by another social landlord.
